The IFSP Annual Conference is expected to attract around 250 of the leading financial services practitioners on the island, who between them represent over 120 financial services firms catering to international clients as well as the domestic market. Coming from the largest accounting and law firms to mid-sized and smaller advisory firms and even sole practitioners, delegates attend the IFSP conference for a valuable discussion on the current issues, challenges and opportunities for financial services in and from Malta.

This conference reaches the required Continuing Professional Education standards and benchmarks of the MIA and so it is accredited with 5.25 Core CPE Hours, 1 Professional Development.

1125 – 1215 Panel Discussion: AI and Automation in Financial Services – the evil twin or better half of the sector?
The panel will, after demystifying AI for the audience, move on to a discussion of the current form of generative AI and the broader forms of machine intelligence that have application in financial services as in other areas. The discussion will keep the focus on possible practical developments, beyond what is currently possible, and seek to make the point that, as with other developing technologies, whether AI becomes a force for good or evil depends upon how people put it in use.

1215 – 1300 Panel Discussion: The Future of PMLFT: the Elephants in the Room! A Poacher’s Perspective
Taking a macro perspective on the PMLFT framework and environment, we aim to explore the bigger picture within the context of the many moving parts of an evolving context and the impact on subject parsons. Addressing the perception of the legitimacy of the current framework within the context of the constitutional cases and what this means for the country, the FIAU, and subject persons; The impact of the updated NRA which was published early this year, and the potential tension between the NRA and the economic realities of the country; The development of Artificial Intelligence as a PMLFT sentinel, and the challenges this may raise for subject persons and regulators.

1410 – 1510 Breakout 1: Tax Developments: EU FASTER & TP Directives on a Clear & Visible Horizon
Chris Curmi, Chair of the IFSP Tax & EU Affairs Subcommittee, will provide a succinct update on global and EU tax developments and the efforts of the Subcommittee in this respect. Trudy Muscat and Ivan Zammit will then present salient matters that have arisen, locally and regionally, further to the proposal by the EU Commission of a Transfer Pricing Directive. Subsequently, Juanita Brockdorff and Bernard Attard will share insights on the FASTER initiative which is at the top of the agenda of the EU Council of Ministers. The breakout session will conclude by opening the floor to thoughts and queries that the audience may have.

In sync with the underlying theme of this year’s conference, this panel will seek to provide the audience with a status check on various key segments of Malta’s financial services proposition, with a particular focus on those areas that are considered to have significant growth potential and on what could be done to ensure that such potential is fulfilled.

This panel will be discussing how Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors and sustainability in general should be integrated into the business, in financial analysis and decision-making processes. Panellists will debate the impact of ESG on company value, shareholder returns, and risk management strategies.

1535 – 1625 Panel Discussion: The CSP Framework: Moving Ahead
The panel will discuss CSPs experience with the rulebook since this was launched, and discuss proposals with MFSA on how the regulatory burden on CSPs can be eased going forward.

1625 – 1715 Panel Discussion: Tax Talks – Where Are We, and What’s On The Horizon?
Four of Malta’s leading tax minds will be sitting down to discuss some of the most pressing issues in taxation today, starting with the implementation of the OECD’s Pillar 2, the global minimum tax rules for large companies. They will also be taking a look at other hot international tax developments, including what’s happening on ATAD3 and proposals on the introduction of wealth taxes, and also taking a peek at how Malta’s Transfer Pricing legislation is working out in practice. The four will also take a look at recent tax-related case law.
