Join the IFSP conference on 7 April at the Xara Lodge or online. This year the IFSP will be looking at some of the hottest issues facing practitioners at the moment, starting with an assessment of the size of the financial services sector and its crucial importance to the Maltese Economy. We shall also be tackling the many challenges the sector faces, from AML requirements, the challenges of recent tax developments such as the OECD’s pillar 2 initiative and the proposed ATAD 3, and how we can reinstate Malta’s reputation as a reliable international financial centre.

This will be a hybrid conference but participants are encouraged to join us physically at the Xara Lodge. An online option will be available for people who are unable to get away or prefer to avoid large gatherings. The registration fee is the same for both options.

How many CPE hours are allocated to this Conference?
This conference reaches the required Continuing Professional Development standards and benchmarks of the MIA and so it is accredited with 5.5 Core CPE Hours.

Format: Hybrid conference – both physical and online

Venues: Xara Lodge and Zoom

This year’s conference with the theme ‘Revitalising Financial Services – Mapping a Sustainable Path for Malta’ should see the participation of various keynote speakers from the political sphere, the MFSA, MBR and FIAU as well as some of Malta’s most innovative practitioners in the financial services industry.

Panel Briefings:

Panel One – Financial Services – The Contribution to the Maltese Economy
The IFSP, MIA and MIT commissioned leading economist Gordon Cordina to undertake a study on the financial services sector in Malta. This study is now complete and the importance of the financial services sector for the Maltese economy will be discussed at the IFSP’s annual conference on 7 April. Gordon Cordina will explain the findings and discuss their implications. Tonio Zarb (IFSP president), David Delicata (MIA president) and Geraldine Schembri (MIT vice president) will provide their views.

Panel Two – International Financial Centres – Are they still relevant?
Joseph Gavin (CEO, MFSA), John Riva (KPMG International, by video link from the Channel Islands), Filippo Noseda, (Mishcon de Reya, by video link from London) will discuss the relevance of International Financial Centres in the context of an increasingly changing international regulatory and tax landscape. This discussion will be moderated by Chris Curmi.

Panel Three – Developments at the MBR
Do you deal with the Malta Business Registry during the course of your work? The registry is central to the work of most practitioners. During this panel session, Geraldine Spiteri Lucas (Registrar of MBR) will be discussing the changes at the Registry in conversation with Stephen Attard.

Panel Four – Malta’s Tax System at the Crossroads?
The international tax environment is undergoing a radical transformation. What does that mean for Malta? What path will tax policy in Malta need to take? Neville Gatt, Andre Zarb, Conrad Cassar Torregiani and Robert Attardwill be discussing the way Malta may best navigate a way forward during this session.

Panel Five – Life after the Grey-Listing
Malta is set to emerge from the doldrums of grey-listing. The course we plot for Malta is of vital importance. Juanita Bencini will discuss the paths open to us with Rakele Cini, Anthony Cremona, Christopher Buttigieg (MFSA) and Kenneth Farrugia (FIAU) during this panel.
